Phase-two startup of Danieli QSP plant at Hoa Phat, Vietnam
Quick and smooth startup for improved production capacity and rolling process optimization
Leading Vietnamese steel producer Hoa Phat is operating its enhanced QSP plant in Dung Quat.
The second-phase expansion project carried out by Danieli on the Danieli QSP – Quality Strip Production plant in operation since 2020 (with more than 6 million tons produced) consisted mainly of the installation of an additional fifth finishing stand and a third downcoiler in the hot rolling mill area, along with two more segments added to each of the two thin-slab caster lines.
Results were extremely good right from the beginning, with a quick startup and 6-m/min caster speed on both 76- and 87-mm slab thicknesses achieved just a few days from the re-start, and the production of the 1.2-mm minimum contractual thickness.
Production capacity was expanded from the previous 3.5 to 3.9 million tons per year of low- and medium-carbon, LC HSLA- and MC HSLA-family steel grades. Beside of the contractual targets of the phase 2, the plant also produced weathering steel.
The most challenging step of the second phase was the installation of the additional F5 finishing stand carried out by Danieli Construction in “shadow mode”, without impacting plant operation.
The shutdown was only 27 days, and the plant resumed production ahead of schedule.
A new crop shear previously installed optimizes head and tail shape of the transfer bar, ensuring more stable and smoother thin-gauge rolling. The three downcoilers are fully automated with hydraulic entry-side guides, and allow the high-tension control of a wide range of strip qualities.
Finally, a fully advanced automated pallet conveyor system is used to transfer coils to the coil storage area.
