First heat – first bundle at CMC Steel AZ2 micro-mill

This is the third Danieli MIDA QLP plant operating for CMC Steel, USA, first in the world to produce merchant bars in endless mode

The startup of “CMC AZ2 micro-mill” is a milestone because it is the first of seven Danieli MIDA QLPs to operate with Digimelter/Q-One power feeder, and it will be first in the world to produce QMB-Quality Merchant Bars in endless casting-rolling mode.

Hybrid by design, Danieli-patented Q-One technology will allow direct connection between the EAF and ladle furnace to renewable energy sources. Q-One reduces electricity transmission losses as compared to traditional methods and associated operating costs, with negligible impact on the power grid.

Downstream the Digimelter fed by continuous scrap charge and scrap preheating, a single-strand Octocaster featuring FastCast Cube oscillator and octagonal mold will ensure continuous endless rolling operation for the production of 500,000 shton/year of long products.

CMC AZ2 micro-mill has started the production of rebar –once the merchant finishing section of the plant is completed– it will also produce channels, angles and flats, as well as square and round bars.

This is the third of four Danieli MIDA QLP minimills ordered by CMC Steel.

It is located next to the first CMC AZ1 plant in operation at Mesa, Arizona, since 2009.

The fourth Danieli MIDA QLP minimill ordered by CMC Steel is under supply, in engineering phase, and will be installed in West Virginia.
